Lots of News out of Zero for the Month of May

Three whole press releases have been posted up on Zero’s website for the month of May.  They have sold 59 bikes to the Hong Kong Police Department through their new dealership there, they won “European E-Motorbike of the Year 2013, and the have just release their Military version of their MX dirt bike.  Not mention is that they are moving (or have moved) to a new, bigger facility in Santa Cruz, and Racer X Illustrated got their hands on a 2013 MX.  Don’t read the comments on the Facebook post if don’t already know that young rednecks actually do have access to the internet.

First the news about the big 59 bike sale.  It’s great for Zero, and at the 2013 release back in January the VP of PR did talk about how good fleet orders had been, and this is at least one of them.  If Hong Kong sounds familiar it is because Brammo has had a relationship the police through Jackie Chan’s Brammo dealership there.  Hong Kong is huge (been there, but in a Las Vegas kind of way) so it would seem there is plenty of room for both companies.  The HKPD is getting 2012 Zero Ss which is still a step up on the Enertia+ in horse power but the Brammo fits in the middles between the two Zero models (ZF6 and ZF9).  In the press release Zero says, “The Zero S has an approximate range of 89 miles on a single charge with a top speed of 88 miles per hour.”  This makes me believe they have the ZF9.  Funny enough real world Enertia+ owners and testers have found it fairly easy to get 80 miles of range in city commuting.  So the bike are pretty comparable, if not the Zero having a fair amount more oomph.  It will be interesting if we ever remember to keep an eye on these two fleets and see how the bikes compare in the long run.

As far as the European award, they didn’t win it against Brammo, much like Brammo didn’t win the Playboy award against the Zero.  The Empulse is not available in Europe yet, however the Enertia is and according to this page it wasn’t compared to any Brammo, but a Mavizen.  That bike is what 3 or 4 years old?  MCN rode one and it seemed pretty good back then.  So while Zero has every right to pat themselves on the back, just as Brammo did over the Playboy Best Electric Motorcycle award, I just can’t give either award a whole lot of weight.  But fair is fair.

And lastly there is Zero’s MIL-Spec MX, the MMX.  It is water submersible up to 1 meter.  To be honest, it wouldn’t surprise me if the stock bikes are this water tight.  It really doesn’t read to be much more than a stock MX with a fancy headlight, some quick disconnects, a switch box, and a nifty reserve and a kind of BMS override when low on power.  It’s cool, and convenient even, but not OMG that’s freakin’ cool, cool.

Still, it is really cool to see so much news is coming out of Zero while Hollywood Electrics is taking it upon themselves to take on the racing effort, which has been dominating the headlines here at ESBK.co.  As well it should.

Here are all three press releases.  I recommend you read them:

SANTA CRUZ, Calif., (May 14, 2013) – Zero Motorcycles, the global leader in the electric motorcycle industry, today announced that for the third consecutive year, the 2013 Zero S has been named as “European e-Motorbike of the Year 2013” at Europe’s Clean Week 2020 elections, followed in second place by the 2013 Zero DS. Hosted at the Zolder circuit in Belgium, Clean Week 2020 is aimed at providing an annual review of future-fuelled, environmentally friendly vehicles, bringing together a diverse mix from the motoring and motorcycle industry to provide an independent analysis of alternative powered transportation technologies available today.

“We’re honored the Zero S has defended its title again for the third year. With up to 137 miles range in the city, a top speed of 95 mph and a CHAdeMO accessory that allows recharging in around an hour, the 2013 model line is truly exceptional,” said Edwin Belonje, Managing Director for Zero Motorcycles Europe. “This award names the Zero S as best in class, an opinion shared by the panel of 12 specialist European journalists who extensively tested all the vehicles presented at Clean Week 2020.”

The 2013 Zero S ZF11.4, which won the “e-Motorbike” class at Clean Week 2020, features the all-new 54 hp Z-Force™ direct drive brushless motor which has almost twice as much horsepower compared to last year’s model. With 68 ft.-lbs. of torque from a standstill, this new Z-Force™ motor offers amazing acceleration and throttle response. Accompanying the stunning performance gains is a sleek new look, on-board storage, an improved rider interface and mobile device integration via Bluetooth. Offering a new level of personalization, the 2013 Zero S and DS allow riders to view a customizable dashboard of detailed riding information and adjust the performance characteristics of their motorcycles.

In addition, the 2012 Zero S ZF9 recently won an “e-Motorcycle of the Year” title during an online election held by Motos.net, the leading motorcycle consumer website in Spain, with 533,469 people taking part.

Zero Motorcycles Announces All-New 2013 Zero MMX Military Motorcycle
– U.S. Special Operations Forces Currently Using Zero MMX –
2013 Zero MMX Military Motorcycle2013 Zero MMX Military Motorcycle Controls

SANTA CRUZ, Calif., (May 7, 2013) – Zero Motorcycles, the global leader in the electric motorcycle industry, today announced the arrival of its all-new 2013 Zero MMX military motorcycle (hyperlink). The MMX was developed exclusively for military use in the U.S. Special Operations Forces (SOF) and provides Special Operations riders with unique tactical advantages over traditional combustion motorcycles, as the electric powertrain allows for rapid movement over hostile terrain in near silence and minimal heat signature. Zero Motorcycles’ engineering team worked under military contract to develop the motorcycle. The MMX has met the most stringent standards set forth by the U.S. military, as an undisclosed number of MMX motorcycles are currently undergoing full operational testing.

“It was a very rewarding experience for the Zero team to go through such an exacting development process. The military needed a very specific set of core features on the MMX, and we were incredibly thankful to work side-by-side with them to deliver such a unique product,” said Abe Askenazi, Chief Technology Officer for Zero Motorcycles. “The great news for our civilian customers is that we made the decision to incorporate into our 2013 MX, FX and XU retail motorcycles virtually all of the powertrain enhancements associated with satisfying this project’s stringent military requirements. Our 2013 product is truly ‘military grade’!”

2013 Zero MMX Military Motorcycle – Key Features

  • Specialized military dash for quick and centralized mainline controls
  • Keyless ignition engaged with dash toggle for quicker departure
  • Modular and quick-swappable power packs
  • Wet operational abilities in up to one meter submersion
  • Switchable headlight for night-time stealth
  • Integrated wiring to accommodate quick installation of front and rear infrared systems
  • Safety override and reserve power capabilities to extend range during extreme situations
  • Aggressive foot pegs and hand guards for optimal control
  • Tie down eyelets with integrated tow cable and rear seat strap

The 2013 MMX Military Motorcycles are built off the 2013 MX platform, which is incredibly tough and lightweight, and uses a finely tuned and fully adjustable suspension system to absorb aggressive terrain. Combined with state of the art Z-Force™ technology and an ultra-light frame design, the Zero MMX is agile and fast where it counts.

The 2013 Zero MMX features the all new Z-Force™ motor. With 54 hp and 68 ft-lbs of torque, the Zero MMX accelerates hard, with incredibly smooth throttle control, to allow riders to tackle bigger obstacles and corner faster. When rolling off the throttle, riders can take advantage of regenerative braking to both modulate speed and extend ride times. The performance characteristics of the Zero MMX are also adjustable via Bluetooth and a compatible smart phone mobile device when using the Zero Motorcycles mobile app.

The 2013 Zero MMX integrates the world’s first truly modular power pack system and is available in two configurations: ZF2.8 (one module) and ZF5.7 (two modules). The lockable modules can be individually added or removed, regardless of state of charge, in less than a minute. Charge times can be cut down to around an hour using a scalable quick-charge accessory system or with the CHAdeMO accessory (CHAdeMO charging requires a supporting charge station). Owing a Zero has never been easier as the sealed Z-Force™ motor virtually eliminates all routine powertrain maintenance and drives the rear wheel by way of a beefier 520 chain.

CHAdeMO Charging Standard
The CHAdeMO fast charging standard is the most widely adopted DC Fast Charging standard and has over 2000 installed stations worldwide, with an additional 1000 in Europe expected before the end of 2013. According to Nissan estimates, 2000 fast chargers will be installed in the United States by the end of 2014, with at least 400 in California alone, supported by government electric vehicle infrastructure spending. Based on Pikes Research estimates, 115,000 of these chargers will be installed by 2017.
