Lightning News: New Lightweight Sportbike and Scooter revealed [Updated]

Yeah, no long analysis or deep insight into Lightning goings on from me, like the last Brammo post.  You can listen to my interview with Richard Hatfield that gives you a bit more background on these bikes.  I totally didn’t see the scooter coming, but it does look good.  I have sent an e-mail to the Lightning folks, but it looks like they may be a bit inundated with requests for information if their Facebook page and twitter is any indication.  But, in my interview with Richard he clearly states they want to keep things quiet until they are completely ready to launch the products the right way.  So this may have been a bit of probing to judge public response as much as anything.  We see car companies do it all the time.  My point?  Don’t get in a huff.  Just relax and wait for the coming picture galleries and info that is coming.  Show your support at the Lightning Facebook page, and just be patient.  Reviews of the new 2013 Zeros are starting to come out to keep you busy in the mean time.

One thing we did notice was that the new fairings for the Superbike were not on display at the Google event.  Waiting on those to make an appearance . . . still.

Update (22APR13):  Just got a reply from Lightning Motors and this is not their official launch, as I suspected.  They did promise to keep me in the loop though.  Show ’em some love on their FB page, and tell ’em I sent you.

Here’s a copy of the newsletter they just sent out:

Lightning Demo At GoogleTo celebrate Earth Day, Lightning participated in Google’s electric 2 wheeled vehicle demo event at their campus on April 19th 2013. There were more than two thousand of Googlers at the event. Lightning brought our record setting Superbike, Sportbike and eScooter to the event. Our products were enthusiastically received. Many Googlers signed up to schedule additional test rides or requested to receive product information. Many were photographed on Lightning’s Superbike, the fastest production electric motorcycle in the world.Lightning is the first company to bring a true electric superbike to the consumer market and have been the first in many other areas. For more than 7 years we have focused on developing the best technology. We are gratified for the opportunities we have had to promote alternative energy. Lightning appreciates Google’s invitation and enjoyed the day of celebration at Google.

Earth Day celebration started on April 22, 1970. The effort for promoting a cleaner environment continues, as the climate changes become more manifest. I found the first Earth Day interview with the co-founder video. It is interesting to look back on how this was started. Click here to view it.

Lightning To Strike On Pikes Peak in JuneNew superbike v7 2The 91st Pikes Peak International Hill Climb will feature an electric head-to-head battle between two professional motorcycle racers.  Chip Yates, 6-time Pikes Peak motorcycle champion, decided to ride  Lightning Electric Superbike  and Tracy chose the Canadian Amarok electric motorcycle.

“The Lightning Electric Superbike is the only electric motorcycle to ever show a higher top speed…. The amazing thing about the Lightning bike, is that it‘s a full-on 180-horsepower electric superbike, faster than a Suzuki GSX-R1000, that anyone can buy – it’s actually in production up in Northern California” Yates said.

The Pikes Peak legendary race is the second oldest motor sports race in the United States behind the Indy 500. With 156 turns over 12.42 miles, sheer drop-offs and an elevation that increases by more than 5,000 feet from the start line to the 14,110-foot summit on a fully-paved public highway.

Pikes Peak is the season opening race for Lightning and we are ready to strike. Stay tuned.
